Hardcore porn movie adaptations of great works of literature either bear very little relation to the original and are just excuses for some thrown together sex scenes, or they miss the mark when it comes to capturing the essence of the source material. However in the case of , Armand Weston's very credible adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic novel Picture Of Dorian Gray, all the wonder of the book is brought to the screen with a clever sprinkling of Weston's cinematic genius. But Take Off is also a very clever take off on the movies of the 1930`s, 40`s, 50`s, and 60`s.
Take Off is a classic example of superb Golden Age adult filmmaking, where the protagonist's name has been changed from Dorian Grey to Darrin Blue, played well by porn stud Wade Nichols, and instead of a painting, his youthful image is captured on a porn film that his liberated 1920's flapper girlfriend, the wonderful Georgina Spelvin, secretly had made of them having sex outdoors. When she shows the film to him later, he wishes that the film image could get old, and that he could stay youthful forever. And that that is exactly what happens.
In the present time, at a lavish pool party thrown by an unknown host, a young lady, Linda, played by Leslie Bovee, meets a handsome Texan called Ray, played by Eric Edwards. This being porn, they decide to have sex. Exploring the house, they happen upon a projection room, where she accidentally turns on a projector. The film that the two guests watch is a very old 1920’s stag reel of a very old man having sex with a middle-aged woman.
Later, beside the pool, Linda meets the mysterious host, Darrin Blue, played by Wade Nicols, and through a series of flashbacks Darrin explains that the old man in the film is himself. In 1922 he was the young lover of free-thinking socialite Henrietta, in another award-winning performance from the legendary Georgina Spelvin. She loved him for his youthful beauty, and had their lovemaking surreptitiously filmed by her chauffeur. Later, as the more mature Henrietta bemoans the inevitable decay that time will bring, Darrin expresses the wish that his image on film should age instead of himself.
The four intervening decades are presented as mini-movies, affectionately sending up cinematic genres of each period. The 1930’s tackle gangster movies with John Dillinger and a Hollywood hopeful named Jean Harlot, played by one shot wonder Brigette Lynne. Darrin Blue’s moll, played by the under-appreciated Clea Carson, takes a cream cheese bagel rather than a grapefruit to the kisser.
Casablanca is the theme of the 1940’s segment, with clever Bogey and Bacall and Raymond Chandler references thrown in for good measure. Virginia Slims, the awesome Annette Haven, is trying to secure passports for her husband and his teenage daughter, played by Ursula Austin, with cult drag queen Holly Woodlawn guesting as a very frisky torch singer.
Toothsome Susaye London dons an itsy bitsy yellow polka dot bikini for the 1950’s vignette, with rebel without a cause Darrin rescuing her from a group of ragingly hormonal youths before collecting his due reward.
The 1960’s, as might be expected, are all about drugs and free love, featuring hippies like angel-faced Patty Boyd, black starlet Gloria Todd, ravishing Beth Anna and future “Pussyman” David Christopher.
Lamenting the passing of time and his inability to form a lasting romantic connection over the decades because of his unchanging youthfulness, Darrin makes love to Linda in the moonlight beside the now deserted pool. Inside the mansion, a very old lady is watching his dirty home movie one last time before it turns to dust. Henrietta’s return makes for an unexpectedly touching conclusion to this magnificent adult classic, singled out by porn critic Bill Margold as the best porn film ever made.
If anything, Take Off must rank as one of the very few porn films that are almost too ambitious, even by the high standards set by the best features from the so-called Golden Age. Its lofty aspirations apparently discouraged initial 1970’s audiences who were more interested in just sucking and fucking, as it lost money on its first run Cult band Elephant’s Memory contributes a varied score, perfectly suited to each time frame, with even a catchy title song.
With a cast list that reads like a virtual Who’s Who of Golden Age porn, it’s little wonder that the acting stands as some of the best this genre has ever seen. Wade Nichols really holds Take Off together as Darrin, imbuing the character with a tragic loneliness tempered by his movie star impressions. The sex action ranges from tender to passionate, and is both stylish and steamy but never raunchy, making this another perfect porn film for couples wishing to heat up their nighttime viewing. Annette Haven was at the height of her porcelain perfection here, and she will take your breath away in her exquisitely lit bedroom sex session with Wade.
